Abstract
Session3 (Approaches for modeling atmospheric optical turbulence.)
Title'Analysis of local meteorological conditions in Macon using the MM5 model system'
AbstractIn the North sector of Argentina (25º S and 24.5º S, 65.5º W and 67.5ºW) is the Macón ridge, 4500m-5500m, one of the places preselected by ESO (European Southern Observatory) for the construction of the European ELT (Extremely Large Telescope).
This work aims at characterizing the meteorology of the region on mesoscales (of the order of kilometers)using MM5. Subsequent for analysis of measurements in-situ and selection of cases, the model used, MM5,help to simulate the conditions of Macón. In order to test the sensitivity of the model, indicators of the turbulence such as TKE (Turbulent Kinetic Energy) and the Richardson number (Ri) are compared to vertical profiles of Cn2 obtained by MASS in two cases: 1) extreme turbulence (9-09-2005) and
2) low turbulence (30-11-2005). The comparison of meteorological analysis
in situ and sinoptic are discussed. Comparisons with Paranal will be presented.
